GOD ANSWERS PRAYER

We are a praying church. Please spend time daily in prayer and the Word. Wherever you are at 12 Noon, pray to God for the strength of this pastor and Church to be what God intends for us to be. God can and will use all of us. Wednesday is a day of prayer and fasting.

ROSE OF SHARON AME CHURCH HISTORY

In January of 2005 Reverend Carolyn Baskin-Bell became inspired by the Holy Spirit to plant a church in the Cerritos Norwalk community. After much prayer, she consulted with her pastor, Reverend Leslie R. White of Grant AME, Los Angeles, who previously supported a new church work in the St. Louis area. Reverend Baskin-Bell continued to pray, survey and consult until she experienced an overwhelming conviction to launch out on this divine adventure.
This vision was shared with the Presiding Bishop of the Fifth Episcopal District, The Right Reverend John R. Bryant, as well as the Presiding Elder of the Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas District, The Late Reverend Howard S. Gloyd. Both Bishop Bryant and Presiding Elder Gloyd affirmed the launching of a new church in this area and granted Reverend Bell permission to pursue the vision.
In the Fall of 2005, Reverend Bell met with Brother Merritt and Billie Vincent, residents of Cerritos, who caught the vision and assisted in surveying the area for people and places to worship. After attempting to secure space in schools, community centers and other facilities, God opened the doors of the Marriott Hotel in Norwalk, California.
On Sunday, June 17, 2006, the first official worship service of the Rose of Sharon AME Mission Church was held at the Marriott Hotel in Norwalk, California with fifty persons in attendance. Reverend Bell preached from the text of John 21:15-19 and proclaimed “The Importance of Spiritual Nourishment.” As the pastor of Rose of Sharon, Reverend Bell publicly confessed her love for the Lord and the commitment to provide spiritual nourishment for God’s people. Pastor Leslie R. White and members of the Grant Church family attended to affirm the ministry as well as commit to be the parent church.
During the Eighty-Second Session of the Southern California Annual Conference held September 24-October 1, 2006 at the Pasadena Hilton, Reverend Leslie R. White presented Reverend Carolyn Baskin-Bell to the annual conference announcing the birth of a new church in the Norwalk area. The Presiding Howard S. Gloyd offered a motion that the Rose of Sharon Mission Church be admitted to the Southern California Annual Conference. It was passed unanimously and on Sunday, October 1, 2007, Reverend Carolyn Baskin-Bell was appointed the founding pastor of the Rose of Sharon AME Church. The founding members of Rose of Sharon are: Brother Larry Bell, Sister Carmena Bell, Sister Larissa Bell, Brother Merritt Vincent, Sister Billie Vincent and Sister Helen Ford.
In the first year, the greatest challenge involved securing a place of worship. Worship services convened at the Marriott in Norwalk; Sheraton in Cerritos; Norwalk Inn; Saddleback Inn; Kinkos Conference Center and Cerritos Park East. Through all of this, Rose of Sharon acknowledges that the church is not dependent upon four walls or brick and mortar but the church is wherever the people of God gather together in the Lord’s name.
In May of 2007, church school was organized and Sis. Helen Ford was appointed Director of Christian Education. In January 2008, other ministries were instituted: Prayer Ministry; Andrew Ministry has influenced the spirit of being a “Contagious Christian” under the leadership of Sis. JoAnn Matute; Bro. Alvin Adams, Director of Men’s Ministry; Sister Helen Ford, Women’s Ministry; Sisters Gaina Flores and Carmena Bell, Youth Ministry; Sister Billie Vincent, Worship Support and Pianist. During this conference year, Three Stewards and Three Trustees have taken leadership positions. The Servant Leaders are: JoAnn Matute, Billie Vincent and Donald Watkins as Stewards; Alvin Adams, Helen Ford and Merritt Vincent as Trustees. This past May 2009, we launched Mid Week Spiritual Nourishment which meets on Wednesdays for a time of prayer and study of the Word. Pastor Bell will complete a series dealing with “The Family, The Foundation of God’s Plan” in the month of July. Through all of these ministries, the main objective is to “Release the Fragrance of Jesus Christ.”
Since November 2007 to the present, services are held at the Saints of Value Ministries Center, a training center under the direction of Dr. Victoria Johnson. Rose of Sharon considers this a relationship of spiritual collaboration and cooperation. Rose of Sharon partners with Saints of Value’s Food Ministry and community outreach events. Through this association, the ministry is enriched.
This Third Anniversary Celebration represents God’s powerful hand melting and molding an available people into Holy Ghost filled agents of change. By the power of the Holy Spirit, the objective is to continue “Serving and Sharing as We Move Forward by Faith.”
